Newyork city help

Hi all...

I am planning to move to New York in a month or 2. I dont know any one there. My biggest concern is residence. Can any one suggest me what would be normal cost of renting a place in suburbs of new york city from where i can get easy access to public transportation?

also can anyone suggest where should i look for if i need to rent a place or something? like do i need to go there live in a hotel for few days and in the meanwhile look for a place or is there a site or someother agency thru which i can find a place?

i studied in toronto and normally the place near the university area was economical? does anyone know if thats true for universities near or in new york city?

also i have heard that certain parts of newyork have high degree of crime? which are those areas and which areas are good for living?

any other suggestions would be helpful?

i figured to give you a hand...try www.craigslist.org they have apt. listing in nyc and several other misc. things.

somebody had suggested me that in general discussion forum. ne ways i thank you for your concern. if you have any more suggestions..please feel free to write it down. I am trying to collect as much info about nyc as possible..
