kr.h2006: I'm coming out of college and the main reason I had trouble breaking in was not doing a summer internship. I think it's debatable how much you can learn from doing an unpaid internship over a three month period. I got the job based on my knowledge. I actually invested since my freshman year of college and managed to beat the market over the past three years. So to answer your question, I never felt that anyone else was more qualified than me. It was never a question of how much I know, just of how much I was willing to work I think.

turkish - it sounds harsh, but it's just the reality. it's better to honestly assess your abilities and choose a career that fits your strengths than spin your wheels for nothing. you can't really disagree with that.

i'm happy for the original poster that everything seems to be working out though. he seems to have more substance than i initially perceived.

I think it goes along way to illustrate the poster's determination to succed.

Excellent work, Gobucks. I am glad to hear of your success in landing the job.

I'll probably be in the same boat as you and KKent w/ no internship so learning about what you guys went through and how you battled through by fine tuning resumes and learning better interviewing tactics is very beneficial.

Theo, the best advice I think we could give: DON'T GIVE UP! Persevere even when things look bleak, bleak a thousand times bleak.

Who does an unpaid internship these days? Aren't 90%+ paid?

I think in general an internship gets your feet wet but you don't get hired because of what you learned there. You'll almost inevitably start from scratch with your first full-time job. Rather, when I see a resume come through for someone who had 1-2 good internships, I think two things...

1.) Wow, this person had their act together to go after that job; and
2.) Hey, if XYZ investment bank thought they were smart enough to hire, maybe they're worth a shot.

When I see a resume with no internship, I think...

1.) Did this person just want to screw around in college? and
2.) Did he/she apply for internships but couldn't get hired?
3.) If he/she didn't get an internship, do they really want to work in the finance industry?

I personally think a good internship is a huge differentiator between candidates. Others may disagree, though.

Congrats on the job.

I agree goblue, I was just responding to another poster's comments that I wasn't qualified in terms of skills for this type of work. I know first hand how many employers place a lot of value on them.

That does seem logical and good reasons, Blue.

I am hoping things go well for me with level 1 in December and I will be able to put "CFA level 2 candidate" in my resume following mid Jan. Perhaps that will make me somewhat more "legit" as I enter my job search.

Thanks, KKent. I won't give up... you can believe that!
