I will be starting a job that will require me to do valuations of companies, at some point in the future. Therefore, I am looking to improve my financial modelling and valuation skills now rather than later. I am seriously considering ordering a self-study course from Wall Street Prep.

I have searched the forum on this topic and although there has been some discussion I was looking to get some more feedback from the board. What do you guys think? Would it be useful of is it Sh*&^%T?

By the way I am not really interested in the Certification just the knowledge and the excel templates.

Thanks

Thanks for the link takumi. I have read through it before.

It is not overly informative. Only one person (drs) that posted there had actually used the material and he was only 1/3 of the way through (no offence to any one who posted on that thread).

Although I value the opinion of drs (who at the time did recommended the material) I was just fishing to see if there were any others who had an opinion about it.

If I do order the course I will definitely use the code that drs provided. Thanks drs and now that you have had a bit longer to look at the material what is your recommendation about it?

Thanks

why cant u get your company to pay for modelling education?

if you could ask your company to pay for it, fine.
But i wouldn't pay 500 bucks for (basically) a book and a few spreadsheets. Ok, you get a "certification" but that sounds like a worthless line on your CV and you said yourself you didn't care about that (and you're right).
Honestly, just pick a few books (Investment valuation by Damodaran + the McKinsey book about valuation + "the value sphere" for example) and you'll be fine.

i'm uninformed about that wall street package, but i'm not really trustful in any kind of commercial product that has "wall street" in its name. But that's just me.

Different people have different styles of learning. I'm perfectly capable of cracking open a book and getting through it through brute force, but I prefer having someone talk me through the material and then go back to review it in the books. For me, I get more insights by having the spoken overview of the key points and the logic, and then gather more details from the review. A lot of books are poorly organized for getting the overview, so it's hard to figure out which details are most important.

I went to one of Hamilton Lim's seminars on "Valuing a Company" at NYSSA. He's the same guy who does Wall Street training. I found it very helpful, though a little expensive. I didn't feel cheated, but I'm not sure I would pay that much to go again.

As far as I can tell, Wall Street Training, has a video of Mr. Lim lecturing, and then sample excel statements, and covers a lot more material, so I'm thinking it might be worth it. Not quite ready to bite though.
