Optional Segments in CFA Institute Books

Hi everyone,
I dont understand the relevance of the optional segments in the CFA Institute books. Are they required readings, will any of the material in them be tested on. If they are not important what are they there for. Reading for the sake of reading. There is already substantial material to be covered. Does anybody know?

readings are provided in the books and are the authors original writings.
CFAI has decided based on the LOS they are likely to test - what is necessary. What they will not test, but are present in the writings become “Optional Segments” in their books. They will not be tested.
 
lol…skip over them. dont read them unless you are completely lost on a topic.
 
In the Corp Fin section, there is a large optional section that is simply a review of some of the important but simple Level 1 concepts. If you remember the concepts, skip it. If you need the review then read it.
Some of the optional sections might have interesting, but not important stuff in them

Here’s what to do: Look at all the LOSs. Then look at the CFAI books. Then cross out the 2/3rds of the words that are not related to an LOS.
If this seems like too much work, get someone to do it for you: That’s what Stalla etc notes are.

That’s the point, it’s not worthwhile for an individual to actually do this analysis.
So candidates either:
1) Read the CFAI texts and all the extra LOS-unrelated material, or
2) Buy third-party study materials.

Isn’t this how you learn though?
 
Obviously everyone’s pathway is different, but my own personal method was to use Schweser and CFAI materials together.
While CFAI can seemingly go off-track at times, one never can really know what material is irrelevant and which is foundational. I can tell you that one of the major FRA vignettes on last June’s exam used a fact pattern that was not addressed in Schweser.
