I'm taking the exam Dec 06, I'm getting started 1 month later than I planned on and need to buy my study material ASAP.

I've read mostly great things about Schweser notes but do not know how detailed they are. If I have a Finance background, will the notes give enough explanation on each topic? Can I pass with only the notes and of course practice exams?

I think this is important for good advise after reading through all the other threads:
I know that the series 7 doesn't compare to this, but the first time I took it was before I had any background in Finance (I went back to school after I got the 7) and passed it with ease in 1 month. And when I say I had no Finance background, I knew what the Dow was and a bond, but didn't know anything beyond that.

My accounting is defintely rusty and it seems like FSA is a huge part of the test. I went to a decent university and dodged all of the tough teachers (may bite me in the butt now). So my accounting skills maybe very far behind. Any suggestions?

Finally, any suggestions on practice exams. I've read mixed views about both, Schweser and CFAIs'.

Thanks in advance!!!
Josh

I just looked at an example of 2005 Schweser notes (link below). I take it this is the structure of the notes. That being said, and as sad as it is, I barely remember duration or convexity of a bond. Does anyone know if the economics book and accounting book that CFAI recommends will cover that.

Or, maybe the better question is, if I don't really remember a majority of finance / accounting stuff from school, would I be better of buying the CFAI curriculum?
Thanks,

Schweser covers 95% of test material. You got money & time, buy the CFAI material. If you want deeper understanding, buy the material.

Otherwise, Schweser is good enough.

just know the schweser notes inside and out and do as many practice tests as you can (at least 3!) and you will be fine.

Exactly. Can't wait for June 07...I'm going to make that test mine

Hopefully by the time i take L2, that the CFAI will make the condensed version of the study books so that I will not have to waste that extra $$$ on extra books.

People say that the CFAI is just another business bu I wouldnt mind it at all if the started selling books for L2 and L3.

I was scheduled to take the June exam, I postponed to December because I thought there would be derivative pricing and valuation on CFAI -- found out too late that I was wrong.

Anyway, my university uses a few of same texts for CFAI. I bought Schweser for another perspective. I guess I'll be fine.

The texts, you referring to the economic and accounting book on CFAI's website? I'm debating on buying them. I guess I'll see if I need them after I get the Schweser. I still have to order it. It's going to be a fun 6 months.

I read on another forum about stepping up the study routine. I think I'll do 10 hours per week starting next week, then in mid-August step it up to 15-20 hours, depending how comfortable I am with where I'm at. It'll get me to 250 hours, but won't know if that's enough time for me until I dig in. I have a feeling alot of the stuff isn't going to be all that familiar to me.

Well, I meant the Derivatives, Investment Analysis, and Financial Management texts. I think I have a strong enough background in accounting and economics not to need those.

I did it. However I had an MBA and 5+ years IB / Finance experience.

I have neither. I have about 1 year experience as an investment analyst for a real estate developer (not really too much to it though, IRR cash on cash, just simple stuff) and got my bsba in finance but don't really feel like I learned all that much. I guess I'll find out when I start studying
