So I got a voicemail on my cell phone yesterday evening from what I presume to be the HR person for a good sized investment bank for an equity research associate position. I called back around 6 PM and she was not there so I left a voicemail. I did a follow-up call late this morning and still no pick up from her. Haven't gotten a call back yet, so do y'all think I've already been passed up from playing phone tag?

Call and hope they pick up. If they don't pick up DO NOT let it go to voicemail, just hang up. You can probably call 3 times a day doing this. Eventually you'll get them and they will have to talk to you whether they are interested anymore or not. Remember that looking for a job is just like dating, you have to play the game.

Dude...it's the weekend. HR probably isn't in on the weekends, and if they are, they might not care to return your phone call then. Just relax -- if they were seriously recruiting you, your not picking up the phone won't cost you the chances. They'll just get in touch with you again the next time they're in. You can keep trying them again if you so desire but don't leave them anymore voicemails. If they don't call back, then they don't really care, but the fact that you missed their call is NOT going to be what cost you the opportunity.

Just don't flip out about it...if they want you, they'll definitely call you again, but understand that you're not their highest priority -- and if they're a good-sized investment bank, recruiting you probably is not even on their top 25 list of "things to do" either. No offense, but this is just how HR at big firms work.

Thanks - this actually had occurred on Thursday/Friday (not to let any of you think I'm trying to reach HR on a Sunday!) and was already suspecting that HR was not in that day. Regardless, I'll give them another call on Monday to check in.
