Hi Friends
This is Bipin chartered accountant from India. I am working with a big organisation in Internal Audit division but find that i can't continue it for long because of the pathetic job profile. As always profile of finance thrill me now i want to change my profile but can't crack the interview of finance because of my experience, so i decided to join CFA. Well i would like to,know from all of you whether CFA help me to change the profile or CFA qualification serve as a booster only for those who are already in same kind of profile. Please give your valuable suggestion so that i can make a better judgment for my future.
Pls also tell me how tough the course is especially mathematic portion?

Bipin

The course is tough but it's nothing that can't be mastered if you put in the required time. The math is not difficult at all but it will take a great deal of comprehension to nail these tests.

Bipin,

I think passing the CFA exams is the easy part for someone trying to get into investment management. However, more difficult is the 4-year relevant experience requirement (check on CFAI website) before you can get the charter and start using CFA designation after your name. By definition, having the CFA charter implies that you have already broken into the field.

You could possibly gain some mileage from having just passed the three exams without relevant experience, but really think hard about it as it is going to be tough. Everbody's granddad, grandmom, dad, mom, brother, sister, uncles, aunts and the dog in India are taking CFA exams in India with no experience. Very soon you will have so many people there looking for an entry level position that salaries would plummet.

Also, note that CFA is mostly relevant only for investment management. This market in India is exploding, which may counter what I have mentioned above.

If you can do basic math, you will be fine.

CFAAtlanta,

I would agree with you to some extent that only relevant people should concentrate on the exam. But again, what differentiates a CFA is not the work exp but having cleared the exams. Work experience is accrued by everybody in due course but that does not guarantee competence. I guess CFA does a survey and find outs how many CFA's are required in the market every year and fixes the pass % according to it...(correct me if i am wrong..) If so we need not worry about grandmom and dogs in India giving...it is only who get the charter that matter..
again every other guy without experience passes then either CFA really needs to have a better look at the questions..or it is not worth attaining...

I never said this - all I said was that w/o experience there is no charter.

That is simply not true. Ask potential employers and you will see they value experience a lot.

Market decides what is valued, nt you or me based on theoretical aruments.

You could not be more wrong - this is misinformation that borderlines on being insane.

No work expereince no charter. A market full of people with all 3 levels passed and trying to get any job at any cost to get the experience that will get them the charter. Race to bottom as far as salaries are concerned.

CFAI has done a great job balancing academic knowledge and work experience and that's why the charter is valued so much by employers.

Listen, I am not saying that passing all 3 levels and not having any experience (hence, no charter) is of no value. However, if there are thousands of people in that boat around you and there are a thousand other with their charters, it will be a folly to think that you will have easy time transitioning careers just because you passed 3 exams. It's a good start but by no means guaranteeing a lucrative career in finance.

Thanks for all the valuable suggestion.

Can i have little more input so as to makem it more firm decision
