The Hope diamond is on exibit at the Smithsonian museum of natural history. Go steal it and propose to Jessica Alba instead.
 
If you can, try and make an experience out of buying the stone / ring. My fiancé and I went to Brussels as something like 2/3 of the worlds diamonds are cut there. We visited many back street wholesalers, we even meet up with a friend and visited a diamond bourse (have you seen the beginning of the movie Snatch?). We spent two / three days in Brussels and had a memorable experience. Highly recommended!
Shame the football world cup is coming to an end, you could have gone to South Africa to buy a stone and seen some of the games as well.
