Thanks for your advice in my previous posting "Medical doctor private equity interview".

I've got a VC / PE interview for a fund which invests in medical devices [biomedical engineering]. I was hoping you would, maybe, advice me with regards to:

* What are the current key growths drivers and key challenges facing the industry.

Do you know of any free reports about this industry available on the internet, or any good websites I can get up-to-date information about the industry.

I guess the more I know about this industry the better.

Thanks for your help numi and others.

Drop your contact info and maybe I can come up with some useful material if I have time. BTW, you probably won't find any free reports on the internet.

Keep in mind that you are asking a very broad question and there are many moving parts in medtech. I suppose when people ask what's going on in the industry, the characteristic response is to tell them about the key drivers in the large-cap space. However, there are lots of important small- and mid-cap players especially in emerging areas, and different indications/disease areas need to be evaluated differently.

There are very few research analysts that cover the ENTIRE device space -- way too broad and way too complicated. That said, I think there are a couple things you can do for a good starting point: (1) find a recent industry report or handbook (maybe a 2Q06 preview or afterthought piece); (2) check out recent news/commentary, even on Yahoo, for the major device players such as BSX, MDT, JNJ, STJ, and so forth -- these tend to be the movers and shakers so at a minimum you should understand the key drivers for these companies if you just want a general overview; (3) look for press releases/presentation slides from the most recent analyst days. For one thing, JNJ just held their analyst meeting today, and there were a bunch of press releases that came out. These slides do a good job of framing what's really important and showing you what investors really care about.

This is a lot of stuff to look at, but you should develop a basic overview if you understand the products, the competitive dynamics, and what disease areas/indications each company plays in.

Anyway, I hope this helps. I try to be as helpful here as I can while maintaining a strict separation between hobbies (general advice on AnalystForum) and professional commitments (sell-side investment advice, which is how I get paid).

Is this thread dedicated for numi?...like anything you want to ask..come here to ask?

if so, could i ask my question here.

Numi where you able to find any info on the medical devices industry. Thanks.

yes, i look at that industry every day. i just haven't had time to look for a report for you. you should find a way to get sell-side reports and look for industry notes like the ones i mentioned above. there are plenty of posts here about how you might be able to obtain sell-side reports. also, i think my earlier post gave you some good pointers and that should be more than enough to keep you occupied for a while if you can't get sell-side research. i'll try to get to this when i have time but if it's time sensitive, you should find some other means.

Hey numi, I just sent you an email about an event on 14th Sep that might interest you (yes, 1 day notice, sorry). Take a look and let me know if you're interested. Cheers.

Hmm... this thread is useful... maybe we should have a set of forums dedicated to threads for each of us, for just these types of communications...

well apparently this a thread with exclusive info for Numi
just wanted to say I liked ur posts in general and in particular on GD

Hi Bambi, thanks much for the feedback -- I enjoy reading your posts too (both on GD as well as OT, where you seem to get more attention than anyone out there!).

bchadwick -- I'll have a look when I get home. I also got your message from a couple weeks ago, but have just been pretty swamped with work. Life would be much easier if we could check personal e-mail from work, but it seems to be an eternal game of catch-up since I usually just like to veg out on the couch when I get home. I'll definitely look for the e-mail when I get back tonight, though.

Apologies for the earlier post... I didn't mean to make others feel excluded. The email I have for Numi is not necessarily checked too readily and I just wanted something that would catch his eye quickly, because of time dating.
