Research vs. Trading Experience

I've always heard that a way into buy side research is through sell side research, but I haven't found this to be the case. Most of the buy side analysts I know started there or came from an unrelated industry. In fact, I've had buy siders tell me that they'd rather hire someone with trading experience.

If my long-term goal is buy side research, does it make any sense to take a position in sell side research?

Thanks.
Gary

While I agree that I don't seem to see many former sell side analysts on the buy side, I can think of a few that have made that switch. Unless you have another good option, going sell side first should be fine, and better than nearly anything else.

does it really matter whether you are sell side or buy side?

Better than being a trader for a few years?

don't go into trading with the plan of getting into research...

trading is a fairly broad label, but I think ahahaha is right. The question we should be asking is, if you want to be on the buyside, why not just go be on the buyside?

because they like being a nerd, and getting called chickenfuc ker by bankers and traders

I'm working on it, and it's certainly my goal, but I've seen stronger interest from sell side firms. I currently work in an unrelated industry, and it's tough going to work everyday knowing that you'd rather be doing something else. I'm ready to jump, but I don't want to make a move that's going to be counterproductive.
