How should i approach using short hand in my studies & prep? Are graders likely to doc points or will they overlook if they understand?
for example - using pharma instead of pharmaceutical companies
saying HC analyst in reference to pharmaceutical companies (meaning healthcare analyst)
do you recommend biting the bullet and getting used to spelling things out or am I ok to use short hand at my own risk?

There are many discussions on that subject. The common wisdom is that you have to make a reasonable assumption that someone will understand (even if she is a charterholder).
Your first example is probably fine. Very common.
Second example is probably bad use of abbreviation. If you are talking about pharmaceutical companies than analyst will suffice and HC makes it confusing.
I think if you need to use some uncommon abbreviation more than once then the best way to avoid confusion is to define it before use in your answer.
