hey guys, new to the board, and started studying a couple weeks ago for the december level one exam...I am using the stalla materials (study books, cd rom lectures, and notes).

Just wondering if anyone has used the system in the past and what their thoughts on it are on how they prep you.

Also, I read a previous post about the exam not being as calculator based as you thought. Any thoughts on this? I obvisously am gonna prep as much as I can, but do you guys seem to see more theory questions then calculator questions (for those that have taken level one)

I've used both Schweser and Stalla, though not the whole system. I like Stalla's study guides better but Schweser's question bank better. I found it useful to do some from each provider so as to get a feel for different ways to ask questions, etc.

As for the test, run a search on this, it's been done to death. But for the most part, you need to know relationships between variables, this goes up, that goes down, this causes that, if this happens, which is the most likely outcome. This is not to say you don't need your calculator--you do. In fact in many cases, you may find that setting up a quick little mock example on paper helps you answer a question.

thanks, yeah it seems most on here have been using schweser, not to many posts on stalla experiences..

I used Stalla video lecture and question bank for the december exam. I didn't pass, but I wasn't surprised by anything I saw on the exam. I just needed to put more time in preparing. I purchased the schweser question bank for the june exam to see new questions, but I didn't like it much. The formatting was a bit odd-why 5 part questions??? and the questions were also more vague compared to stalla's. Schweser did have more questions though. I didn't use any other schweser product so I wont comment there. hope that helps a bit.

I did Stalla live classes, which allow you to see online classes if you miss a session. Don't know if I passed or not, but I thought it prepared me well - certainly better than I could do by myself. I thought the Stalla practice exams were harder than the real exam in that they had you compute lots of parts from balance sheets and put them together. Very hard to do in 90 seconds per problem, but the result is that you understand how to do the calculations better. Fortunately, the real exam didn't have such computationally intensive questions this year, but I don't know if this is unusual or not. A lot of people seemed surprised that there werent' more calculations on the real exam this year.

Agree on the Stalla practice exams. Tougher than the test without some of the oddball questions Schweser throws out from time to time.
