Study Materials December 2010

I am looking into purchasing supplemental study materials for the December 2010 exam. There are so many options/packages out there I am having a hard time figuring out what is really necessary. It seems that the Schweser materials are favored along with Elan Mock exams. Could some people who have passed the June 2010 exam please advise on what they found success with? I am hoping I don't have to spend $1500 on extra study materials.

I've heard anecdotal feedback that Elan is better than Schweser, especially as of late. I recently purchased Elan as I plan on sitting for the June 2011 exam. I have compared it side by side and I found Elan to be slightly easier to understand. It really depends on personal preference so download the free versions online and go with what caters to your style.

I know a few ppl personally that have recommended schweser. One has passed all 3 levels and currently works on wall street. He told me to not even bother with CFAI material its just way to long and time consuming, and just to buy schweser material. And another buddy who passed level 1 last year recommend schweser as well. I then went ahead and bought the schweser notes and will be sitting for the dec exam. Iv gone through 3 of the 5 books so far and the material in schweser is pretty straight forward. If you dont understand a part you can always cross reference with the CFAI books supplied.

Thanks for posting. Did the people that you know use the "Premium Plus Package" $1399 or simply the notes? I am trying to figure out if the whole plan is necessary or a little overkill. Let me know what packages you have found success with.
 
Could more people please advise on success of Elan or comparison between Elan vs. Schweser?
 
I used the 2009 version of Schweser notes and practice exams for June 2010 exam, together with CFA books. Not so confident after the exam. Kind of borderline. In 36 hours, then I will know if I pass or not. Let's hope I pass.

If the worst happens, should I re-use the 2009 version for December exam, or instead try the Elan notes? The CFA books will be the same, and if I re-use the Schweser 2009 notes, I can re-start study right away, and no waiting required. But the 2009 notes seems old, but the main topics and ideas probably the same. I am paying my own study materials so cost is a factor.
 
I'm using the Elan study notes ($130) right now and have found them helpful. The great thing with the notes is that they cover every LOS and answer, without the BS. They also have provided a pretty good introduction to the calculator, which is new to me.
The thing that worries me is that it seems like the questions in the book are much more difficult/intense than the study guide supports? Then again, we've got four more months and a ton of studying left.
For the next two months, I'm gonna work on memorizing the equations, relationships, and definitions. For the last two months, I'm gonna try to do 1500-2500 questions.
Any suggestions?

I used Elan's Ultimate Pack for the June exam along with the QBank and I was happy with my prep (we'll all know how I did tomorrow).

Jake: I suggest you do questions as you go along. Do some after each reading and then some more after each study session. I didn't use the curriculum at all except for EOC questions and summaries and I was always scoring more than 80% on the QBank.I would watch a video, then read the study guides and then practice. Goes pretty fast if you're attentive during the lectures. If you dont want to spend on the videos try to get their practice exams and the eleventh hour guide.

Luda002: The only schweser product I used was the QBank which was a good resource for practice. However I felt that the style of questioning on the actual exam was very different from the QBank. I used Elan's study materials and thought they prepared me very well.

I am sure you'll find more opinions on the matter if you use the search function here. Personally, I would encourage you to go for Elan's PacK.

Understood, but it seems like a large (and possibly unnecessary) expense on extra study materials, after already having spent several hundreds of dollars for the CFAI curriculum.

Why not just invest the time needed to cover the material in the CFA books? At the least, there's no risk of not having covered something that the other books might've missed.
 
I've used Stalla and Schweser. I believe Stalla holds your hand a little more explaining things and giving you more examples to work with.

Schweser is more efficient and really lets you focus on what you need to know.

I think either are sufficient but you will really need to make sure that you alone really understand the concepts or not and are well practiced in them. That takes active participation.
