Time horizon

Hi,
Which one would you choose when you have 2 mid age workers family with 2 child’s.

4 stages time horizon. First, until child’s college year, Second during college year, Third, after college year until retirement, and last, after retirement.
or
2 stages time horizon. Until retirement (including college year), After retirement.

I think it would be three stage, first is till college year, second will be till retirement and third will be after retirement. I may be wrong in this but this is what I understand
