I’ve been studying since June and I’m progressing relatively well on my plan. However my scores on the mock exams is not quite what I was hoping for. I’ve done 4 mock exams, and these are my average scores:
Ethics
75.0%
Quant
73.8%
Econ
52.8%
FRA
74.3%
CorpFin
81.3%
PortMan
38.9%
Equity
69.4%
FI
72.2%
Derivs
75.0%
Alts
63.3%
At this stage in the game, I’m driving myself a bit crazy trying to figure out what is the most effective use of my time now, so I’d really appreciate any thoughts or words of wisdom, bearing in mind the following:
1. Econ is a no-go for me. I don’t understand it. Period. And I really think that trying to re-read and understand 300 pages of material will lead me down a wormhole and I will bever be found again. So any suggestions of what I could work on to improve Econ, without re-reading everything?
2. Portfolio Mgmt is not my work experience, so that material is all new to me and I’ve got a few sections to work on, so will be covering that again. Same for Alternative investments.
3. I work approx 60 hrs a week in a full time job and the only time I have off work is the two days before the exam. I try to find 30 mins at lunch time or after work but its tough to fit it in with commuting and you know, eating and sleeping. At weekends I spend about 10-12 hrs each day doing practice exams and reviewing solutions/LOS’s.
My main concern is that I’m just so borderline. I’m too close to averaging 69% for me to feel confident. I have a live mock exam coming up and I’ll be doing the CFA institute mock exam shortly, along with the other 2 scheweser exams I have left. But short of just churning through more questions, does anyone have any advice for topics to focus on or tricks for just getting what is effectively 2-5 questions more?
Feeling deflated :-(

With the exception of Econ and PM you are scoring just fine. I felt the same with Econ, so I can’t help you there. Just keep plugging away. I took several days off of work heading into the exam and didn’t leave the house and ignored my family. I did take the day before the exam off from studying though as a mental break. You seem to have a good plan, so just keep it up. You don’t have to be an expert in everything to pass :-)

Thanks for the feedback. I took the Schweser mock exam today and was very disappointed with my score, 61% overall. The weird thing is I thought the exam was not too difficult and that I’d done ok, so I was really shocked to see the score. I thought I knew the topics, but in quite a few cases I had misinterpreted what they were asking for. And when I read the answer I could see where they were coming from, but it just wasn’t my first thought of the answer. I guess just more reading, more questions, more mocks……

Sometimes, you gotta live on the edge. That’s what makes life great and exciting!

don’t be over confident, you will lower your guard and that’s not good for CFA exams

I am an accountant. My threshold for living life on the edge is a lot lower than average.

I don’t know how you prepare for it, but avoiding foolish errors is a big deal during the exam. To the extent you can prepare for this in a way that works for you, it is time well spent. if you can be mentally on point during the exam, based on the scores you posted, I like your chances.
