I too will be looking for apartments come next summer if all goes according to plan. I'm from the southern Chicago suburbs now (think Joliet area) so I was hoping for a multiple bedroom apartment to split with a few of my college buds.

If you had to pick one place where the night life is decent and the rent is cheap or at least reasonable, what would you recommend? I'm assuming that I'll be working in the loop so if I can take the train, that'd be great. Oh, and if the neighborhood isn't completely ghetto, that'd be a plus too...

Depends on what you're idea of reasonable is. You're from Joliet, so there is going to be a HUGE price differential. If you've got roommates, though, and three of you can pay 700/mo rent, you can get a nice place in a great area like LP, lakeview, or the south/west loop areas.

En.. How come no one mentions Streeterville? or New East? These are all very nice areas. Very good condos/rental buildings and right in downtown, plus it also offers the quietness you need if you think downtown is a little too crowded. The best is these areas are right next to the Lake. If you live in Chicago, stay next to the lake or a beach. That's the best part of this city.

The rent for studio is 1000+, and 1bed is 1500+ or around 1500, 2-bed is around 2100+.

Good luck!:)

Streeterville has nice buildings, but not much of a nite life. For those rents you mentioned you could get a pretty kick@ss place in Lincoln Park/Wrigley where there is awesome nightlife.

Streeterville area is a bit too pricey for my taste. You can get much more for your money elsewhere.

The other problem with Streeterville is that despite the fact that it's closer to downtown, the commute to many parts of the loop from Streeterville are longer than the commutes from spots in Lincoln Park and Lakeview that are closer to the train. If you work close to the magnificent mile, Streeterville is very convenient. But if you work by the Sears Tower, getting there from Streeterville can be a pain in the butt.

Furthermore, I think that socially, Streeterville doesn't offer nearly as much as other neighborhoods. Sure, if you're in your 40s and want to go hit on 20-something bimbos, then you can head over the viagra triangle and hang out at Gibsons or Tavern on Rush. But if you want a more casual going-out environment for people in their 20s and early 30s you'll be much happier in neighborhoods like Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wicker Park, and Lincoln Square.

I disagree. If you live in Chicago, stay close to the train. I've lived less than two blocks from the brown line for most of my time in Chicago, and it's made my experience here as good as it could be. My commute to work is short and consistent. The same can't be said for those who live along the lakeshore and commute by bus. The bus system in Chicago is pretty good, but riding the bus in rush hour traffic can make for a lengthy commute.

Even though I'm not right by the beach, I can get there in a matter of minutes by simply hopping on my bike and heading east.

commute is key in chicago
cant stress it enough
@#$%& weather blows tho
