Hi all

I just graduate college in Israel and planning on coming to NYC and work in the finance industry. I guess not many have heard about my college hence thinking of getting an american credential such as CFA designation. I plan to do MBA anyway (I have top grades) and need an advice from people who work in the industry.
To what extent will it help me to do CFA if I'll have an MBA? Do I even have a chance to get a job, given that I graduate a nonamerican school and english is not my mother tongue? I'm not picky and ready to take any job related to investments.
Also, I've heard one need work experience in order to get into a good MBA program,is it true?

Thanks in advance

Good call, get the he!! Out of Israel people are getting kidnapped there.

Actualy I'm more concern about the high taxes and lack of opportunities than about getting kidnapped....

Your biggest problem will be getting a viasa which allows you to work here. have you addressed that yet? It also depends on what your undergrad degree was in - that will affect the job outlook. Any relatives in Israel with connections at leumi or hapoalim? maybe they can get you a trainee position with their office in NYC.

Best bet is find a track that will allow you to work in NYC and go to New York University part-time for your MBA (or full time). They have a decent program and it's not very hard to get in to (but expensive if you're employer isn't paying).

My undergrad degree was in economics and I have an american citizenship since my father is amarican. The idea about trying to join leumi or hapoalim at their offices in NY is a good idea- I'll try it. What about the CFA designation? do you people reccomend me to take the level 1 test?

SIMPLE LIKE THIS...IF YOU WANT TO WORK IN FINANCE AND BE COMPETITIVE, DO IT

I will tell u my experience. I am from Peru. I got an scholarship and i graduated from a school in WA. Upon graduation, i went to NYC, I didnt know anything and anybody in that city. My english was not excellent and my accent was very strong, something than americans dont like. However i got a job after two weeks of applying in a very respected financial company as an analyst.
Then, I moved back to Peru after a year because i missed my family. Now i am working in a Big 4.
NYC is a tough city. The smartest people in the world is there. It is very competitive environment. You need to have more credentials......TAKE THE CFA.

pierovic18 is right. To be extra competitive in the industry, you want to take and pass the CFA exam. I will even recommend it more because you are a foreigner. I worked in the US for approximately 7 months, and I thought my accent was a plague I was carrying.

With the CFA credential, you be able to stand out

Good Luck with it

I learned something...if you are foreigner, you need to better than your competition because in the same conditions, he will beat u....
