I know this is not an MBA board, but wanted to see if anyone here had any experience with UT Austin?

I am thinking about applying for school in 09, and am starting to lean more toward the side of fun, good school in a location I enjoy over the great, prestigious, supercompetitive school in the north.

Any input would be appreciated re: what the school is like, what the career outlook is like (obviously not quite what a top-10 is) but more specifically, etc

almost went, did not, went to better school - and glad so- UT ranks went down in b week this year.

bldg is old, kids ok, nothing great

i'm aware of the lower rankings, and i guess im saying that i might be getting to a point where i'm not going to measure my life by the ranking of my school (even though I could get into a better school than UT). I'm trying to look at this more holistically in terms of quality of life, etc.
 
I was going to an UT event few weeks back but did not go. I got sick. They place well across the nation. Not as energy focused as rice and austin has some hot women
 
If you want to work in Texas, go to UT. You will have an absolute blast in austin and the girls there are amazing
 
As someone who works in ER in Austin...UT has a good business school and if you want to work in Texas it is the place to go. You will get more milage out of a UT MBA in Texas then one from an Ivy League...It is just the culture.

Girls in Austin are no joke. I used to think Tallahasse had the best hottie per capita ratio and then I visited Austin...It is like LA without the "plastic".
 
These are exactly the responses I'm looking for. How does the finance job market in Austin compare to Dallas/Houston (I'm guessing a lot smaller)? Also, what would a decent apartment cost while in school? I'm currently paying ~1600 for a studio in NYC.

I live in Houston and pay 1200 for an 1100 square foot, 2 bedroom apt 3 miles away from downtown in a nice area. Austin is a little more pricey for the downtown area but there are still a ton of great places to live.
 
Don't forget the instate tuition for UT Austin if you're a Texas resident. Coming out with half (or less) the debt to other comparably ranked schools can have a pretty big impact on your ROI, no matter what your prospects look like post-graduating. Not to mention significant cost of living differences between Austin and, say - LA, NYC, and Chicago for example.

I've only done some cursory research on UTA, but I believe they have a student-run fund that would surely look great on a resume for finance types.
 
i am not a resident of texas, but is there any way to qualify for the second year?
I'm guessing not but that would be awesome

They do and I think it is run by Sandy Leeds...He and the program is pretty well respected. Aim/Investco recruits alot out of this program for its Houston office.
 
Sandy Leeds is a very nice guy. I actually went to hear him speak about something at the program up in Dallas and have emailed with him a few times. I think most enjoy his classes.
 
Golden, I work in Corporate Finance for a manufacturing company. Probably getting laid off in January but we will see.

What about you?
