seed stage - research
early stage - production ( 1st & 2nd)
mature stage - expansion

seed stage - earliest stage, vc helps in R&D
early stage - start up financing
first stage - product development
second stage - the co is producing and selling but no income
3rd stage - just before a major expansion
4th stage - before IPO

seed, early and first - formative stages
2,3 and 4th - later stages, goods produced but co is still privately held
