What Are You Guys Thinking?! READ ALL

You know, I think the right answer is “SecondToNone, I look forward to doing whatever I can do to help you pass all of your CFA exams and I may get nothing out of that except the satisfaction of helping someone else”. If that confuses him, maybe someday it won’t.

I personally get lots of satisfaction out of helping people learn stuff, maybe even to my own detriment. Only a small fraction of the people who take the exam spend any significant time on AF. Most of those people do pass. Taking the CFA exams is a small part of your life, might as well get some satisfaction out of doing it.
I completely agree with this. Many times in my life I’ve gone ahead to help others to my own detriment. There’s no explanation for that.
But I seem to have a very different kind of confidence when it comes to thinking of people I know as competitors. “Do your worst, and I will do mine” - Count of Monte Cristo.

It’s also worth mentioning that some of us have been the recipients of help from those who’ve passed a given level.

Dont we help our buddy when he is facing a difficulty completing his task at office? He in fact is our competitor during appraisal times, even though he is our team mate or our best buddy! Inherently every human being is good - I personally believe this. Thats the reason why people share what they know and I think there is a small selfish motive also to clear their concepts by teaching somebody - nothing wrong :) whats the fun anyway in life if I am just worried about competitions! Knowledge is the only wealth which grows with sharing - if you would like me to be at my philosophical best :)

the forum slogan is “study together , pass together” , if anyone doesnt like the idea of helping others , why would he/ she register in the first place , noting that the forums concept was created to gather ppl with the same interest and to help each other.

I assume you realize that by posting this, you are doing exactly what you are telling others NOT to do.

I believe the best ones don’t need to be helped from anyone on this forum. If anything, they’re the ones answering questions from the rest of us. So the upper limit is probably set regardless of what happens on this forum.

I suppose you’re right in theory, but the odds of the help you give someone on this forum being what takes them from failing to passing, and then on top of the the odds that you failed because that person passed are just as low as the odds of you passing b/c of the extra practice you got on a topic while you were helping them.
short version: I think you’ll be OK helping someone on here

I would also suggest that helping other people understand will help you to concretise your understanding of the subject as you work out how to explain it to someone else. Certainly that’s why I’m always happy to help. Unfortunately I’m also frequnelt too lazy to reply. Sorry for that one guys.

Not so sure about that. I’ve been around here long enough that I remember bchadwick as a Level 1 candidate. I can’t say for sure that he asked questions then, but he probably did.

Different perspective. Perhaps real issue is not with curvature of exam result, but with number of passers. Job market has limit and we compete. More people passing, more competitors, fewer chances for the job and lower salaries – classic problem of doctors, lawyers, accountants and …hydraulics. Market is Darwinian not Christian paradise.
Not far away from Darwin into dark part of human psycho - not all motives of Good Samaritans are noble. Paternalistic and supreme feeling of knowing more than others helps some broken egos. Analyze it.
