check the link http://jobs.efinancialcareers.co.uk/job-4000000000252001.htm

ultimately this is the type of position i would liek to be in, only based out of my home city, i just want to know how good do you have to be to get a job like this, i plan on spending a few years as an auditor to get a ca designation while i write the cfa exams. if i get a few years of corporate finance/valuation experience at a big four or mid market IB(perferably in structured finance or restructering) Could i transition into a position like this if i show them that i know what im tlaking about?

Also is it possible for an analyst/pm in a position like this work in a city with a different time zone from the main office. Like if my company was based in london how likely would it be that they let a guy who lives on the west coast of n.america do some of their research and write trading strategies?

the jopb description is pasted below for those who dont want to click the link

@#$%& the ripples son,

im the type of guy that can't find the motivation to do anyhting if i dont set goals and plans.

besides, itll only take me four years to get that all done, four years will fly by.

You're most likely going to need a background in special situations analysis, which most likely means a few years on the sell side.

a lot can change in 4 years......but hey......whatever gets you from a to b.......

No, but I don't know of too many distressed/ special situation shops that will hire somebody with no applicable experience. On the SS, you might still get placed on a special situations desk though.

Special situations is vastly different from vanilla research, although I suppose another way to get in is to come from a restructuring (IBD) background or particular corporate law practices.

I'm not saying those are the only ways in, just the most obvious paths.

To be honest, I don't know much about exit opps, but if I were to attempt to make a move from research to banking, restructuring is what I think I would find most interesting.

I know that their activity levels are typically counter cyclical to typical investment banking. Banks that I know off hand that have solid restructuring groups are Lazard and HLHZ.

A more dedicated i-banking forum might be able to provide better info, although take everything you read there with a very large grain of salt.

Interesting. Would you mind sharing what you know about Lazard and HLHZ's restructuring practices?
