I like the HP 12C. The newer platinum version is a little faster.
Its uses RPN logic which is a much faster and more logical data input sequence. It basically works like a stnadrad 10-key calculator.
I never really used the 12C until I the CFA curriculum.....I had always used an HP 17BII or 19BII. However, after delving into the curriculum I can really appreciate the usefulness of the 12C. Most of calculations you will need to access on a regular basis can be accessed with fewer keystrokes.
My experience has been this:
-most of the people that dislike the HP have never taken the time it takes to learn RPN. You can learn it in about 10 minutes....seriously!
-most of the people that have experience with both RPN and algebraic data input choose RPN.
....Play with both and choose the one that feels most comfortable.
I also have Schweser's calculator book....this book shows keystrokes for both the HP and the TI for all kinds of CFA problems. In virtually every case you get to the answer with far fewer keystrokes using the HP. The Schweser book recommends the TI so you don't have to learn RPN logic....but again, you REALLY can learn all you need to know about it in about 10 minutes.
