work experience and MBA

as a process of my planning, I have come to an understanding that an MBA might be in the works in 3-4 years time.

what type of experience is required or will increase my chances of getting into a school such as Rotman?

my 6 months working experience thus far is in a discount brokerage as an IR. within 6 months, i can move within the firm.

what jobs will be good so that when the time comes, it'll look good on the application process?
 
Investment banking jobs look good on MBA applications. Have you looked into this field at all?
 
i won't be getting into IB.....its too late for me......i will have to scrap up whatever experience i can get....hopefully after an MBA, i will have a better shot.

but what else besides that. if i work through various positions at TD, you think that will be ok? i saw some profiles of people at Rotman, some had retail banking (branch work), and most others had very vague job descriptions.

If you're willing to take the risk, I'd suggest getting out of discount brokerage while you can and devoting yourself to the job search full time.

Don't know about this particular school, but getting into a MBA requires good marketing on your part + excellent GMAT + Good grades + Some luck thrown in for good measure.
 
my grades are ok, GMAT-not too sure yet, i have bad luck....

the thing i think most people overlook is the fact that here at TD, we have promotional opportunities. the turnover rate is extremely high. we have first dips on jobs. nobody is stuck in this role if they don't want to be. people move out of here every 2 weeks to go whereever they're qualified for. Sure enough, no one goes to ibanking but many have went to Securities and AM as analyst.

I think DB at RY and CIBC might be a dead end for the promotional opps. sucks there from what i heard.

I will still search for a new job, but moving within TD is good too. we'll definitely have to see. i still have at least 3 years left before i will even consider applying.

but i'm really wondering, i can somehow move to Securities, would that be considered relevant experience?
 
The best experience for an MBA is something that's truly UNIQUE. I'm talking about leading African safaris or being a submarine captain. Tons of i-bankers, consultants, IT guys, and engineers apply to b-school--it's very hard for them to differentiate themselves from the pack.

B-schools love crafting a class with a diversity of experience.

In addition to being unique, good work experience will also have the following characteristics:

- lots of teamwork
- lots of leadership
- project based, not calendar based
- lots of initiative
- lots of innovation
- advancement and promotions


I think MIT has already posted their essay questions--take a look at them and you'll see how important the factors I've listed above are to answering the essays.
