I imagine it is just assumed accurate since we have to sign the PCP and since at least one reference has to be from a local society member and the reference form has a small spot for a brief descritpion. Most societies aren't huge either. I'm sure most folks know each other and could just ask the sponsor. I haven't heard of them calling supervisors to verify. However, I've never sponsored someones application either though.
Don't forget the power of google too. For a lot of us, I'm sure our names are attached to various reports and releases. a ten-second search could somewhat verify, although not disprove, claims.
