Hello All,
I am looking for an entry level job, but since investment positions are very difficult to get under these economic conditions, I have decided to apply also for Treasury jobs.
I would appreciate if anybody could help me to see the potential career progress of an Treasury analyst..
Is CFA helpful to get a Treasury job?

A good Treasury guy in a hedge fund is an enormous asset (and paid well). Good Treasury guys build up lots of contacts and are good at schmoozing. If you aren’t good at that, you can end up being a bookkeeper forever.
 
A job in treasury is considered very sacred and reputed from what I hear. However, you need to be sure that its NOT a sales job.
Also, you’ll need to explore whether a switch to investment positions is possible after your stint in Treasury (when the market recovers) as that is your choice. Maybe others can offer more insight on that aspect.
CFA is surely a big plus for the treasury positions, however FRM is given a lot of weight too.
 
good position, lots of MBA buddies opted for this since it is less stressful than trad Wall St jobs, pays the same or more, etc
 
Are you talking about the job for the treasury department (government)? or the finance department of Forturne 500?
 
I am talking about the finance department of any company..(I have MBA and MSF)

i interned in treasury. they seemed to value the ctp more than anything else. our dept was mostly concerned about cash management and credit card fees. i think if you could find a company with some fx exposure, it would be pretty interesting.
one of the analysts got his charter and moved into m&a and investor relations for the same company, so there should be some mobility from there

I am also thinking about going for CTP instead of studying for CFA Level II. But I am not sure yet..
 
I work in Treasury of a Fortune 500…
CTP is probably good if your trying to break in but I’d but the CFA head and shoulders above it. I broke in by applying for a financial analyst rotation position, schmoozing and being in the right place at the right time. I think that last bit determines 90% of your success in life.

I used to work in corporate treasury. If you do the CTP, make sure that it’s something you want to do long-term, because it won’t do much good in any other field.

I work in the Treasury Dept of the largest privately held company in the US and it’s a very fulfilling experience for me since the role encompass a whole lot: FX hedging, Commodities reporting and analysis, International Cash Management, Short Term Investment Management, Banking relationships etc – PLUS the roles are in line with my own personal goals (most important aspect in my opinion).
Did the Level 1 a while back, got my MBA, will be taking the CTP in January and I am currently working on my PhD – Finance…..some day ( hopefully in the next couple years, I hope to finish up L2 and 3 and get my Charter )
My experiences:
1. CTP – Most valued for typical treasury roles (cash management, forecasting, liquidity mgt etc), plus it’s not that hard to read for and pass
2. CFA – Transcends “typical “treasury functions and a definite big plus for overhaul treasury functions.
3. MBA/MSF – Valuable when backed with some working experience.
4. I think the key is finding a Treasury position that is versatile and will allow you to experience different facets of the market.

have looked into a role in treasury as well….
could you maybe give me an idea of the amount of time the CTP takes ( I realize everyone is different) but maybe compare it to Level prep time? Also a little info. on the level of difficulty of the CTP

Great info. My long term career goals is to work for a short duration fund (a money market at fidelity/twprice/ssga/any big buy-side firm would be ideal) or a fx trader. How would treasury work experience help with getting into those roles? What is the usual path to break into the treasury industry? What are some of the exit opportunities?
 
1. $$$ - depends on the company and role. If it’s simply cash management – then I would say nothing to write home about. A full Treasury role encompassing a lot of the functions I have mentioned or also including such things as risk management etc….. Then heck yah – definitely very worth it!
2. Career Path – Risk Management, Treasurer Roles and any in – depth analysis like you would see in IB – on a smaller and more focused scale though. A good exposure in treasury therefore means you can ultimately break out into any of the facets of treasury as a specialized field. With a CFA – I can only think that the avenues are all over! About ” breaking into treasury”……mmmmhhhh - not sure - Personally, I worked in Accounting for a Commercial Bank and the switch to a Treasury Role outside of a financial instiuttion was very smooth….. :-)
3. CTP – Average study time – I would say maybe 3 hours daily for about 3 months ( averagely) – In my opinion , you cannot compare studying for the CTP to the Level 1. The CTP is not by any chance easy – the burden of study is however not as huge as that required for the CFA.
The CTP a is 3 and ½ hour exam with 170 multiple choice questions ( 150 scored). AFP self study guide is 7 modules for the different sections e.g. role of treasury, FA, liquidity management, payment systems, working capital etc and it gives you how many questions you should expect from each section ( kind of guides you on what you need to put more weight on etc)

Unfortunately I am a career changer and I do not have any work experience in finance..Is it possible to get a Treasury job without finance work experience? If not, what type of entry level positions would lead to career in Treasury?
