Actually, who here isn’t working today? Just curious.

If you are a bank you have it off, traders would have little to do…as for me its a nice quiet day to catch up on things so I am cool with it

I’m off.
IF the traders aren’t there, why should I be there?

i think we should be off to pay honor to a great civil rights leader. not having the day off can be seen as racist to some.

People that cover or work in non-US markets might need to work today. But it would be great if they thought a bit about MLK too.

True, which is why if you work at a HF you might have to work today. But generally at banks people only cover 1 market.

I wish we had MLK day in Canada. I’d rather be sleeping.

If you give everyone the day off for MLK day where does it stop? The Chinese new year is next week and I’m sure it would seems racist to some not to get that off.
Since banks and the markets are closed today I think it makes sense for those folks to have the day off, it seems like everyone else shouldn’t though IMHO.

Who cares about MLK. If he didn’t do it someone else would’ve.
It’s just like any other federal holiday. It means a day off, and that’s all.

wow, I hope that post is meant to agitate and start some sort of battle-thread because it has to be the most ignorant and stupid thing I have heard in awhile.

????
Just remember, it’s Robert E. Lee day in Virginia (though maybe they’ve changed that by now).
If MLK didn’t do it, Robert E. Lee already would have.
Whatever “it” is…

You don’t honestly believe he’s the only person who could’ve started the civil rights movement do you?
Someone would’ve eventually done it, he just happened to be the first one who got enough support behind him.

yep, someone might have stepped up sometime if he didn’t, I agree. But that sometime may have been decades later, and that someone may have tried a different way to go about it and had much different results. Is it that hard to just give someone some credit?

??? Who cares about MLK???
Either you have never been on the wrong end of repression and racism, or you are ignorant of the many sacrifices that have been made to insure the freedoms and opportunity we enjoy today. MLK day isn’t just about one man, its about an idea and a movement.

It never ceases to amaze me that MLK, Jr. gets a national holiday when people like Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, George Washington, Harry Truman, and Alexander Hamilton (to name a few), who have done far more for America than MLK, Jr. did, would have no national holiday. The civil rights movement was well on its way with or without MLK, Jr. He was a good man who did a lot of good, but his accomplishments pale in comparison to the aforementioned. What about John Brown for God’s sake? A white man trying to lead a revolution to free slaves–he willingly gave his life for freedom! What about General Sherman, who decimated the south and won the war against slavery?
My university didn’t give MLK, Jr. day off until 2004 after being called “racists” by the black and “progressive” community. I resent this. I love how liberals throw around the term “ignorant” when most of them wouldn’t know who John Brown even was or what Alexander Hamilton even did–hell, most liberals who throw around the term “ignorant” probably couldn’t even name MLK, Jr’s accomplishments, or the accomplishments of his namesake during the reformation.

I deal with international markets. so our team has to work. just not all of us. I stayed home. The people who wanted an extra day of vacation stayed in.
