Yet another textbook/study guide question (L1)

EMAILNOTICES>noI'm about to order my textbooks for the Level 1 2001 and probably like many are debating whether I should go for the textbooks or the study guides. Based on the numerous posts here and all over the web, it seems to me that the consenus is purchase the textbooks AND the study guides. Again based on the posts I have read, it seems to me that Schweser, Stalla, or AllenResources is the way to go. Any suggestions and when do each of these become avaliable and what is there price?

I am very new to the CFA program.
From the information I read, I will need to study the nine text books and study guides to prepare for the level I exam.
Do people usually go to classes for this type of exam or is it possible to prepare the test at his or her own time? I have a nine to five day job during the weekdays and a two-year-old son plus a husband. Is this goal of passing level I exam in June 2001 too ambitious for me?
I'd appreciate any adice and/or suggestions.

It all depends on your background. As you know, the material is finance, economics, accounting and statistics. If you have a background in any of these areas, you'll obviously already know most, if not all, of the material. If you've had this material before, but have not seen it for some time, it will definitely take major review time. If you put in quality study time, you'll pick it fine I'm sure. They say the average person spends 250 hours of study. If you started now, that works out to 10 hours per week until the test. I am assuming this is for someone who already has a familiarity with most of the subjects. I know a guy who only bought the study material from Schweser, studied every night for a couple hours from late January until the test and passed. He had an accounting backgroud though. Hope that helps.
 
Thanks for your response. It always helps to know some general information at the beginning. My backgound is primarily in software programming and database system adminstration. I have professional IT jobs for more than ten years in various insurance companies, engineering consulting firms, etc. I hope to expand my professional area in addition to my primary technical background. Since I probably will not take professional gardening and painting until I reach the age of retirement (some thirty years later), I'd really like to learn something interesting and useful.
I don't know exactly how becoming a CFA is going to be beneficial to me. I just figure that the financial knowledge is something I can easily pick up along the road on my life journey. I will give myself some time to pace the reading materials in to my regular schedule. Hopefully, it will not be too big of a deal.
Just out of a curiosity, are the third-party study guides more effective than the textbooks for passing the exam?
 
Anyone interested in buying 2001 Allen Resources Study Material (Study Guide and Textbank software - exam questions and exercises)? After purchasing the materials, I hurt my knee and need to do a surgery in Jan. I decided not to take the exam. The materials are brand new. I am willing to sell it at reasonable price.
