Your experiences with "famous" investment professionals

Use this thread to share experiences/dirt on well-known people in the industry you've worked with or done business with. By "well-known" I don't mean Joe Schmoe managing director of some regional bank in buttf*ck Canada, I'm talking the Soros's, Cohens, and Mindichs of the world.

My most recent encounter with a known entity was Silda Wall Spitzer, wife of Eliot. Granted she's not really an investment professional and she's no Julian Robertson, but she is running the marketing effort for a well-known hedge fund these days. I just have to say she was one of the most pleasant people I've ever dealt with in this industry, soft Southern accent, and in very good shape for a woman in her 50's. After meeting her I felt like going over to Eliot's house and punching him in the face for doing what he did to her.
 
I have met B. Masters from JPM who so called invited some early CDO and many of the early trading in those markets. She was super driven and polished.

Few energy traders that are super big. They were cool as @#$%&.

Bunch of CEO's but all listen a lot and speal very little. Lots of head movement.
 
Had lunch with Peter Fisher - Co Head of Fixed Income @ Blackrock, formerly under secretary of the Treasury during the Clinton administration. No dirt or anything but very knowledgeable and connected man.

Also had lunch with Paul McCulley MD w. PIMCO, actually a pretty funny southern guy.

how dare you say paul mcculley isn't well-known... besides bill gross, he's probably one of the more knowledgeable big names out there in the fixed income space.
 
i didn't have lunch w/ these people, but i went to a DFA (dimensional) cocktail party and met Robert Merton and David Booth themselves.

Last time I checked Bill Gross, Mohammad A El - Erian, and Paul McCulley basically run the largest bond in the world.
 
This chick isn't really famous, but I just got marketing materials for her hedge fund. I did a little digging around and apparently she's Dan Benton's (Andor Capital) wife. Are we talking about face to face meetings? If so, then Meriwether, Sussman, Lasry, Crabel, Niederhoffer and a bunch of other hf managers. Otherwise no one really.
 
I had to physically separate Jack Treynor and William Sharpe over a heated CAPM discussion in my dream once
 
I taught tennis in the hamptons for four years while in college at a very high profile club.

I played doubles with George Soros a number of times. He sucks at tennis, but it was fun to get to know him a little bit, albeit in more of a social setting.

I am a kiwi and Julian Robertson was also a member of the same club. He invited me to play golf as he owns a number of golf courses in New Zealand. I also met with him in NZ.

I also played tennis with Don Marron, Felix Rohatyn, among others. Pretty cool.

sat next to Nassim Taleb once en route to a dinner event he was speaking at. He talked about how there were so many Americans around, apparently that was a bad thing in his eyes. FYI he sucks in person just as he does on TV.

I've heard Paul McCulley is super religious. Did you pick up on any of that?

A little unfair though since they can make the fixed income market move with a single comment.

Not really, just a really outgoing and entertaining speaker. He did have a couple a funny quips about his mother in law / ex-wife and relating that to government intervention in the markets. It was pretty funny. Name dropped his buddy Greenspan a couple times....

Still surprised JTLD hasn't heard of this guy, I see him come across bloomberg ever other week it seems like.
 
I just got out of a meeting with the guy who is credited with creating the Asian high-yield bond market, totally cool cookie, we talked about revenue models and kim-chi.
 
I'm in sellside research and I did a little bit of work for Steve Eisman earlier this year.
