Most people in here already kind of know my background so to cut the story short:
I want to get a designation which will help me move into finance,I am thinking about an CFA +MBA(LSE or Warwick would be the best,I know I wont be accepted at LBS) OR an accounting desgnation +MBA.
The reason I am considering the accounting designation over the CFA is that ,I am not that sure if CFA would help me in areas such as banking/private equity or corporate finance. However maybe I can approach these firms/roles from an accounting side and slowly move up the ladder with a good MBA.Perhaps later work on my CFA.
  1. Is this a good idea ?
  2. Which designation would you think should be the best(my main concern is global recognition, finance oriented and not tax and audit)
Thank you all

ACCA is the easier route, there are literally 100x more open positions for ACCA students than for level 1 candidates.

the same is true for accounting positions vs financial analysts. However can you direct an ACCA towards finanace after a while ? I am considering ACCA because of the fact that its easir and also I have heard you can skip some exams if you have an accounting degree.

Corporate finance yes, PE, Banking, IM / AM nope, unless you aim to work in their accounting department.

Also if you add the good MBA you still think it wont help ?
Because I dont want to get ACCA,MBA,CFA having too many designations alot of the times is not a good sign to employers because:
  1. It shows you havent done any thing except study.
  2. You are not skilled in one particular area but are a generalist ,and being labeled as a generalist has both its advantages and disadvantages

What’s wrong with being an accountant? I have met CFOs and FDs at all the big Euro HFs and AMs and I can tell you its a damn good gig. One of them at a BB said he sat Level 1, failed and gave up because it just wasn’t worth it. Being a BSD FO guy is much much harder than being a BSD accountant.

The only reason I have of insisting on finance rather than accounting is that I have a fairly good network within the finance industry. However I must have certain designations/skills to enter their world.Thats about it.
Also I pride myself on presentation skills where in accounting there is little appreaciation for.

^ Are you kidding?
First: You don’t need designations to play in finance. Its much more of a network or results industry than accounting.
Second: Presentation is critical in accounting. Like 90% of an accountants work (at the high levels) is figure out how to present info spit out by peons or systems. Its all about presentation.
If you are talking about having good PowerPoint skills, then I think I may be able to get you a spot as an admin assistant. No one senior does that.

Dear Geo
By presenetation I mean more of TED talk of presentation then Power Point ,However I have statrted to work on my powerpoint this summer.I used to give out Self help seminars in various universities to raise funds for charities.
I currently move back and forth between Uk &Iran.I must say I am more than delighted because of the faith you have in newbies abilities. What you said had a positive impact on my day.
Thank You

lol.. I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN :D

I seriously dont know what I know what you meant to mean that you mean

Geo , just ignore these threads. For a guy with strong networks in finance already, he sure spends a lot of time theorizing about what he else needs to break in. Quite simply we don’t speak the same language as this guy.
