Hi all,

I am a medical doctor in the UK and have 4 years post-graduation work experience. I want to get into pharmaceutical or biotech equity research in London.

Is the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) of any value. I did think of doing CFA level 1, but I do not think that I can realistically do it by myself due to its wide depth and breath, and the long hours I work.

I also did the GMAT last year and scored 650 and did not get into a top MBA. I am not keen to retake the GMAT.

I am know thinking of getting a job with a pharmaceutical company and doing the IMC and then applying for pharma / biotech equity research jobs. Is this realistic?

Thanks for your help and advice. It is much appreciated.

Yeah, the IMC is a good entry-level exam. It will show a respectavle degree of knowledge, motivation etc whilst not being as onerous as L1. I certainly wouldn't put you off the idea.

As for the second step, i'm not so sure. Getting a pharma job whilst studying the 2 months for the IMC? Im not sure what this adds. I mean you are a qualified doctor, you have 4yrs medical experience. What you really need is *something* vaugly related to business, no?

I met a guy a few years back that got his PhD in Biology and worked at a hedge fund analyzing biotechs. He told me that he never had a day of business classes and the hedge fund took him on regardless because of his background.

He did take a few accounting classes after he joined the firm, but nothing too hard core -- I think he told me that he took some undergrad courses.

Is there a school nearby that you can take classes at? Even a few here and there might help put you above the competition.

Haven't you posted this equation in previous years ?

Trust God and keep your powder dry

yeah, DoctorToER posted a similar message a couple years ago. guess he still wants to get into equity research

yeah, I posted a similar question a couple of years back. I briefly played around with the idea, but did not pursue the idea further until last year when I took the GMAT.

So what you guys think.......what would be my best option.

Thanks

Try to network with people in sell-side Equity Research, covering Pharma and healthcare as an MD you should be a really good fit. They can also give better advice on the best path... In the meantime boost up accounting and financial modeling skills, as they are 100% going to come up in interviews...

DoctorToER,
if you think Level 1 is too much for you, I don't think equity research is a good career change for you.
