I realize the question of how to get into IB has been answered over and over again but I can't seem to find an answer to my situation.

I have 3 years of experience working on the buy-side. Although my line of work does not entail performing financial statement analysis, I currently am involved in pm support and structuring support among other things. I have been looking to see how to go about applying to BB's for an analyst position. So far, I have only found info on recent college or grad school grads.

What are some of the venues of applying to BB's if you are an experience hire? Do you just apply to the undergrad program? Are mid-cap IB firms the only option I have? I would like to participate in an actual IB program if possible. Any help would be great.

You will not be invited to the training program but outside of networking call your head hunter and use one that has been recomended by a trusted friend / alumi....head hunters get 25-30% of your pay package for placing you and low class ones may circulate your resume in places you don't want it going (e.g., your employer) just to make a buck

My suggestion if you can't find a way to network use a recruiter as they will do all the work for you.

Appreciate the feedback. That's what I figured with the training program but it's good to get some confirmation. I've got to figure away to get some networking done. Most of the people I know are far from finance and my job rarely give me the opportunity to connect with people in BB's. Well none that I can regularly call to establish a network. I guess I'll need to look into headhunters.

Hey AM, as KB mentioned, it is true that it will be very difficult to break into an analyst program at either BB and respectable mid-market firms. Age is not your friend and networking is clearly the best way to go, but it will still be very difficult to break in given the strict structure of these programs. Like he said, a recruiter could probably circulate your resume to some very small market banks, but you'd really have to show a committed effort to going out and networking with these folks, even cold-calling if you have to. That will show some initiative and guts.

Let me put it in a different light -- I had the opportunity to get into IBD analyst programs at BB firms -- several of them -- through campus recruiting. I chose to do equity research, and that's been well and good. But let's just say for the sake of argument that I decided I wanted to move to banking instead. Well, even though I'm already inside the "finance loop" so to speak, aside from getting an MBA and looking to join as an associate, I'd just try my best at networking both within the firm as well as with my buddies from college who are now in banking. Either way, I'd have to put in quite a bit of effort and dedication in order to make the jump over the regulatory wall. Basically, what I'm saying is that even with my background and all, I don't envision it being a small task to make the transition to banking even if I wanted to. In that regard, I'm not in that different a position than you, so don't feel like you're the only one that would face some resistance.

My point is that while it's hard enough to get IBD offers through undergrad recruiting, it's much harder to get it once you've entered the working world, especially if you're in an area that's not particularly related and you don't really have transferrable skills (such as modeling, in your case). But if you want it badly enough, you have to take the initiative and be persistent about it. It doesn't matter who you are -- you just have to buckle down, meet the right people, and keep on pushing. Get some recruiters on your side and make some calls. Hopefully you'll catch a lucky break.

Best of luck.

Numi,

Thanks for your sage advice. You always seem to be willing to lend a helping hand. As anticipated, it looks like I'll be searching for a recruiter to help me out. I have made a firm commitment to make every attempt to get into IB, whether it be through an associate program post mba or through any IB boutiques that'll give me a chance. After all, it's the only path to my long-term goal.

Bcaram1,

Thanks for your help but the link doesn't appear to be working. Any chance you can provide the subject heading so I can perform a search? I tried searching under your id but you have quite a bit of posts; making it difficult to find the relevant post.

The thread got deleted - it was about a spread eagle (Pennsylvania) study group in Hook ups.

Thanks.

Anyone have the cliff note version of the thread?

The other 7 are subject to debate (some, in fact, are too fruity)... and I did say 'best bet'. The IB route is about as rigid as it is glamorized.

AM Analyst: "After all, it's the only path to my long-term goal." ...What is your long-term goal anyway?

Just to bust balls, pick one where you have less chance:

Harvard, Wharton, Columbia, Sloan, Stanford

"Just to bust balls, pick one where you have less chance:"

Sloan.

You will have to go to the guerilla forum site to see a copy. I don't think I can post the link or this thread will get deleted.

it was a joke, don't worry about it

too bad it got deleted, it would have been nice to share in the mirth

just walk on over to the dark side and you can find plenty of mirth - and a copy of most deleted threads.
