i worked in the back office operations at merrill lynch.
after 2 years, i did try to get the better positions within the firm but did not work.
i guess the firm being that large, all internal candidates were treated the same as the external ones. the competition was amazing. i got frustrated and ended up working for other company.
i agree with wegowayback, that you are much better off working for a small firm. large firms like merrill, lehman or morgan stanley, you have almost no hope of breaking into analytical position from back office operations.
currently i am working in the accounting dep't but i too, want to break into finance. that's why i'm planning to sit for cfa exam next year.
