I was wondering what an operations person at an asset management firm should be making around but not in the nyc area? The title is pricing analyst, but it is an operations job. Entry-level

Ideally, I think i'd want to get into fixed income research....is working in operations a good stepping stone...as in eventually leading to other work?

if you dont have the traditional credentials to land some sort of analytical position (target school, internship, etc) then yes, back office might be best place to start. if you go this route, my advice would be the smaller the firm the better. search the boards here...plenty of discussion probably covering most of what you're looking for

i worked in the back office operations at merrill lynch.
after 2 years, i did try to get the better positions within the firm but did not work.
i guess the firm being that large, all internal candidates were treated the same as the external ones. the competition was amazing. i got frustrated and ended up working for other company.

i agree with wegowayback, that you are much better off working for a small firm. large firms like merrill, lehman or morgan stanley, you have almost no hope of breaking into analytical position from back office operations.

currently i am working in the accounting dep't but i too, want to break into finance. that's why i'm planning to sit for cfa exam next year.

I was making high $30s 4 years ago in a midwest-based operations job. Most of my peers at that time in the same types of jobs were making about the same or a little more.

Thanks guys...I don't think i'm going to take the offer based on what your telling me and what I've heard. I feel like my current job would be better from the sounds of it.
