Should I really have failed L2 (band 10)?

Before I spend $100 to retabulate my score, can someone please give me some feedback on my score for level 2? I have read through some of the other threads and I honestly feel like I did just as well (or bad) as some of the people who passed.

I know I bombed derivatives, but I thought my scores in FRA, Equity, CF and FI would make up for it.
What do you think?

I failed last year too, but you have to accept the facts.
The fact is that your high scoring areas didn’t get you across the line. Take a few months off and get cracking again.

retabulate if you want peace of mind, but dont give up. In 2014 you will kill the L2 exam with scores like that

Very Unlucky! I just can’t simply think of a reason why you shouldn’t pass with that matrix. i have seen a lot of results that are way worse off!!!!!!!
Retabulation has been shown to be a waste of time and money with a 0% success rate. Better to spend your money on beer or whiskey!

Sorry to see that – that matrix looks like a pass to me. You must be at the low end of each of the ranges.

Your matrix doesn’t look that good, and it also doesn’t tell you much. Your >70 could be 71s and your <50 could be 20s. Save the $100 for some additional mock exams for next year.

I know someone who got 70+ in 6 subjects which comprise 75% of syllabus and still got band 10

I agree with Stocasto. Matrices don’t actually tell you much at all. Really rough guess here but your overall mark could probably range anywhere from about 55% to 80%. (I haven’t done the math)
Your matrix is very similar to mine, I passed, but probably not by much. It really sucks but I’d say accept it as crappy luck and be confident for next year.

your matrix is very good! how did you fail?
band 10 is the most annoying band, I don’t know what to tell you really, but i would pay $100 for this score!

I think Derivatives, AI, and Ethics killed you. Bombing an itemset may be OK, but bombing two/three is not what puts you over. You can have the results retabulated, but it is hard to find quirks in the way CFA grades these tests. Still, if you got money to burn, doesn’t hurt.
Hopefully, you will get lucky. Good luck.

If you’re not prepared to master (and I mean master) the medium and small sections (quant, econ, FI, Alts, Derivs, PM), than you have to crush the big three and take one or two of the other sections with you. Period. You failed because you violated this sacred code.

These are range dude….a 71% in FRA and Equity is different than a 85% and can make the difference between passing or falling even though they are in the same range. Get some rest and come back, don’t give up…

Of course it can happen if you get your ass kicked in equity and FRA it’s just the rule of %…

thinking the same whether its worth the retab…on band 10 as well, pretty heart breaking

The ranges may give you a better idea. If I punched these in correctly, then here they are:

The mysterious MPS is hidden by the score matrix. I think 2012 MPS required around 75 correct answers or more but less than 80 and this year it must be significantly higher, say 80 correct answers or more which translates to around 70% of possible points. The popular 40/60/80 is flawed. A better way is to use the <=50%, <=70% and >70% to calculate the correct answers in each topic and you must round it to integers. e.g. if in 24 questions topic you get 50< and <=70%, you calculate the low end, high end and mean of them. so it’s 13, 14.5, and 16.. After calculating for each topic sum them up and get total low, mean and high. This is still flawed because each person may swing their correct answers in the range in the same direction. In extrem cases one may pass with low number and another may fail with high numbers
I noticed some passing matrix and some band10 matrix are very close, some band 10s look even better.
Here some examples and you can search their name and matrix.
Passing:
Name low, mean, high
lankylint 59, 74, 89
trogulj 57, 74.5, 92
fight4life 59, 75, 91
kingpin804 58, 75, 92

Hartms07 74, 84.5, 95

Good work with the analysis. I would agree with most of what you’ve written. What surprises me, however, is that I completely bombed the ethics section and still managed to pass. There are folks who got a band 10 with > 70% in Ethics and a better overall scorecard. This makes me feel that the ethics adjustment is minimal at best.
