BTW, for some reason, I thought this post asked what a *CFA* was most valuable for. However, since I already answered what I thought was the question, I figure I'll leave my response here anyway. I'm joining the circus now.

Fair enough. You can make a ton of money in a variety of different fields, even within finance. So it depends on what you mean by "most valuable for". But even then, there's no good answer. Highest average salary? Highrest realisic potential? All of those are debatable. Get into finance, find your niche, and enjoy yourself. The money will come.

add get good at what you do to the list that exemp talks about.

Hmmm...how about advancement relative to the particular career track? And more in regard to job title rather than money.

For example, I imagine there are some career tracks where one cannot advance past a certain point with an MBA; that there are also career tracks where having an MBA will provide a head start or a bit of a boost, and nothing more; and that there are career tracks where an MBA is nothing more than a bullet on one's resume (something like a tie-breaker).

Nah. There are industries where past a certain point, more have it than don't, but it's never a "cannot".

In my experience, you look at executive profiles in any industry within finance, and you'll plenty have have any MBA, but there are always a few that don't. I've never been on the sell side, but it would seem to me the MBA is more common over there.

Hmmm...so for those industries where more have it than don't, what is it about the MBA that they like? The leadership or the fact that one has had their "ticket punched"?

I think you should get a job in finance and ask the question again in a couple of years if you still need advice. Until then, good luck.

The issue with that is that I'm currently at a peak in terms of how attractive I will ever be to business schools...

No worries. I'm sure someone would have made a comparison post eventually anyway
