Warren Buffett offered a much better analogy in this year's annual report at the BRK meeting. Google that and read it.
 
All I can say is that slicing is an acitivty, but I don't care where you operate in the money game, risk transfer is the business itself.
 
exemp, was it the one about the Gotrocks and the Helpers? Good one, but a bit long for most conversations. I feel that the crumbs analogy is more concise.

Every year, we hear of ever more efficient knives that leave fewer crumbs.

If we are living off of the crumbs that fall when we divvy up the pie, why are we so insistent on ever more precise knives?

I wonder, then, which is faster: the growing size of the pie or the efficiency of the knives we wield. The answer will mean a net increase or decrease in the amount of pie we each get.
